Happy birthday to American artist William Merritt Chase! A multifaceted character, Chase championed the “plein air” method of painting when teaching students. He founded the Chase School of Art (which eventually became Parsons the New School of Art). He was friends with Winslow Homer, Arthur Quarterly, and Augustus Saint Gaudens, and instructed artists including Charles Demuth, Georgia O’Keefe, John Marin, and more.
