The Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, c. 1498
Oil and tempera on panel
The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute
The Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is currently on view at the Clark as part of Sacred and Profane: Four Hundred Years of Religious and Mythological Paintings at Stone Hill Center. Luca Signorelli was a prominent Italian Renaissance painter who was commissioned for several religious paintings during his lifetime. The Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria was part of a predella in a large, complex altarpiece Signorelli created for a church in Siena, Italy, probably in the 1490s. Predella stood on the altar and supported the larger upper altarpiece panels.
