Happy birthday to French painter Jean-François Millet! One of the founders of the Barbizon school, Millet is best known for his paintings of rural French farmers and his naturalistic style inspired many Post-Impressionist painters, most notably Vincent van Gogh. The Knitting Lesson, with its hazy composition and dramatic lighting, is a homespun image that captures Millet’s style at its truest.
